And in our daily scam attempt corner:
About 3 hours ago I got an automated call "from Apple": someone from Russia is trying to change the phone number on my iCloud account, and if it's not me and I don't recognize it, they asked me to press 1. Since I was in the middle of a stairs workout and didn't have much time to think, I pressed 1, and then I was told an Apple representative would call me soon.
This is where I started to get suspicious.
The original version was a post in Hebrew on X, published October 11, 2026.
How the fake Apple support call went
A few minutes later a "representative" called, spoke very nicely (I assume it's AI), asked if I recognize the number they asked to change it to, and after I confirmed it's not me he asked if I have a few minutes to do a process of blocking the number. At this point I already understood it was a scam, so I asked him to call me back in two hours when I'm in front of the computer. Of course he said it can be done on the phone too, but I insisted.
More than two hours have passed and what do you know, they didn't call again!
I got home and shared it with Claude because I didn't know if Apple even has a service like that.
Does Apple call you about your iCloud account?
So Apple doesn't call you on its own initiative. Ever. The next stage of the trick is usually: a real verification code reaches you, and the representative asks you to read it to him "to confirm the block". The moment you've read it out, he's inside your account.
What to do: H-A-N-G U-P!
- Don't give a code, password or any detail.
- Check yourselves in the account settings if there are unfamiliar devices or numbers.
- A code you didn't ask for arrived: change your password immediately.
Share, especially with your parents!
Update: they eventually did call me, but I didn't answer 2 calls and they stopped. But this is already a serious level of sophistication.
Two more from the same series: a fake hotel booking confirmation on WhatsApp and a fake Cloudflare check that asks you to press Win+R.
